    Parents and Teachers Make Different Contributions to a Shared Perspective on Hyperactive–Impulsive and Inattentive Symptoms: A Multivariate Analysis of Parent and Teacher Ratings on the Symptom Domains of ADHD

    Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterised by developmentally inappropriate and impairing levels of inattentive and hyperactive–impulsive behaviours. We aimed to investigate the differential effects of parent and teacher ratings on inattention and hyperactivity–impulsivity and the extent of genetic overlap between the two behavioural dimensions. Multivariate structural equation modelling was performed on DSM-IV based ADHD ratings by parents and teachers collected on a general population sample of 672 twin pairs, at ages 7–10 years. This study is the first to simultaneously use parent and teacher ratings in twin modelling to examine the effects of different raters on the two behavioural dimensions of ADHD. The findings indicated that hyperactivity–impulsivity and inattention load on to separate latent factors that represent a common behavioural view for both parents and teachers, although there are additional aspects to the observations of these behaviours that are unique to each type of rater. The findings further indicate some shared aetiology for hyperactivity–impulsivity and inattention as measured by both parent and teacher ratings, in agreement with previous findings on the aetiology of the two symptom dimensions of ADHD

    The relative contribution of genes and environment to alcohol use in early adolescents: Are similar factors related to initiation of alcohol use and frequency of drinking?

    Item does not contain fulltextBackground: The present study assessed the relative contribution of genes and environment to individual differences in initiation of alcohol use and frequency of drinking among early adolescents and examined the extent to which the same genetic and environmental factors influence both individual differences in initiation of alcohol use and frequency of drinking. Methods: Questionnaire data collected by the Netherlands Twin Register were available for 694 twin pairs aged of 12 to 15 years. Bivariate genetic model fitting analyses were conducted inmx. We modeled the variance of initiation of alcohol use and frequency of drinking as a function of three influences: genetic effects, common environmental effects, and unique environmental effects. Analyses were performed conditional on sex. Results: Findings indicated that genetic factors were most important for variation in early initiation of alcohol use (83% explained variance in males and 70% in females). There was a small contribution of common environment (2% in males, 19% in females). In contrast, common environmental factors explained most of the variation in frequency of drinking (82% in males and females). In males the association between initiation and frequency was explained by common environmental factors influencing both phenotypes. In females, there was a large contribution of common environmental factors that influenced frequency of drinking only. There was no evidence that different genetic or common environmental factors operated in males and females. Conclusion: Different factors were involved in individual differences in early initiation of alcohol use and frequency of drinking once adolescents have started to use alcohol

    Improved Energy Absorption in 3D Woven Composites by Weave Parameter Manipulation

    3D woven composites show significantly improved out-of-plane properties over traditional 2D laminates. This high through-thickness reinforcement is desirable in crashworthiness applications where crushing energy can be increased by composites’ improved interlaminar toughness. However, their use in practical applications is stunted by the poor understanding of how small variations in weave parameters, whether intended or not, affect the performance of these materials. Here, we demonstrate that small changes in textile properties, in this case pick density and float length have a knock-on effect that can greatly improve or diminish the crush performance of a 3D woven layer-to-layer structural fabric. Quasi-static and dynamic energy absorption values up to approximately 95J/g and 92J/g respectively are achieved. Crush performance is investigated on omega-shaped coupons, under both quasi-static and dynamic loading conditions with crush rates between 2mm/min and 8.5m/s. The failure mechanisms present during progressive crush under quasi-static loading transitions between more expected brittle dominated failure and ductile dominated failure, which is more typical of metals under similar loading conditions. Whereas when dynamic loading is considered, the materials present a more typical splaying failure event. As a result, additional exploration of the three-point bending response of these varied architectures is presented as a means of further explaining the interplay between lamina bending and progressive folding/micro-buckling in these materials. The effect of the weave’s architectural alterations on physical composite properties such as weight, density and conformability to shape is also investigated

    Energy Absorption Mechanisms in Layer-to-Layer 3D Woven Composites

    3D woven composites provide improved out-of-plane performance over their two-dimensional counterparts. This sort of reinforced through thickness behaviour is desirable in crashworthiness applications where energy absorption can be increased by the composite material's resistance to delamination. The behaviour of these 3D materials in not well understood and fundamental data that can be used to validate and improve material models is not yet sufficiently comprehensive. Here we demonstrate that a modified layer-to-layer type 3D woven architecture can be effectively used in energy absorbing elements to produce repeatable and predictable progressive failure under axial crush conditions. Specific energy absorption (SEA) values in glass and carbon coupons of up to 62J/g and 95J/g respectively are achieved in the quasi-static regime; values up 93J/g to were achieved in the dynamic regime when carbon coupons are tested. Carbon specimens displayed uncharacteristic mixed mode failure with elements of ductile and brittle failure. The addition of a toughening agent showed mixed results in this study, providing quasi-static improvements (+8%) in SEA but significant diminishment in dynamic SEA (-22%). The failure modes present in all cases are explored in depth and the suitability of this material for industry crash applications is investigated

    Language and traits of autism spectrum conditions: evidence of limited phenotypic and etiological overlap

    Language difficulties have historically been viewed as integral to autism spectrum conditions (ASC), leading molecular genetic studies to consider whether ASC and language difficulties have overlapping genetic bases. The extent of genetic, and also environmental, overlap between ASC and language is, however, unclear. We hence conducted a twin study of the concurrent association between autistic traits and receptive language abilities. Internet-based language tests were completed by ∼3,000 pairs of twins, while autistic traits were assessed via parent ratings. Twin model fitting explored the association between these measures in the full sample, while DeFries-Fulker analysis tested these associations at the extremes of the sample. Phenotypic associations between language ability and autistic traits were modest and negative. The degree of genetic overlap was also negative, indicating that genetic influences on autistic traits lowered language scores in the full sample (mean genetic correlation = −0.13). Genetic overlap was also low at the extremes of the sample (mean genetic correlation = 0.14), indicating that genetic influences on quantitatively defined language difficulties were largely distinct from those on extreme autistic traits. Variation in language ability and autistic traits were also associated with largely different nonshared environmental influences. Language and autistic traits are influenced by largely distinct etiological factors. This has implications for molecular genetic studies of ASC and understanding the etiology of ASC. Additionally, these findings lend support to forthcoming DSM-5 changes to ASC diagnostic criteria that will see language difficulties separated from the core ASC communication symptoms, and instead listed as a clinical specifier. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc
